Teaching
Introduction to Photography (Photo I)
Summary
Introduction to Photography is designed to survey historical and contemporary images, and photographic processes. Students will learn basic photographic skills, technologies, vocabulary and history related to image making, as well as, the function of images throughout its 168 year history. This course will further enhance an understanding of the aesthetics of historical and contemporary photography and will serve to promote the importance of verbalizing that comprehension.
The course is designed to acquaint students with the concepts and ideas behind the medium of photography and to give students an historical background, so they can better understand how the medium has evolved into its present day digital realm. With a hands-on approach students will begin their survey of photographic processes by acquiring the skills necessary to better understand the traditional and historical use of the medium. Through supervised lab sessions and lectures, students will gain the knowledge and skills needed to produce traditional 35mm, B&W photographic negatives and prints. This survey of photographic images and photographic processes will culminate by investigating the current use of photography in this increasingly digital age and will provide students with a clear basis of how photography has reached its current 21st century state. With this more concise and in-depth knowledge of the medium, students will now be able to explore the current technologies of the medium, pushing there image making skills to new levels in the future.
